Walking into your first industrial refrigeration job and not knowing your tools is like showing up to a construction site not knowing what a hammer is. Here's the short list of tools every new refrigeration tech should get familiar with before day one.
Manifold Gauge Set
This is your most important diagnostic tool. A manifold gauge set lets you read both high-side and low-side pressures simultaneously. In industrial ammonia systems, you'll be using this constantly to understand system state, diagnose issues, and verify your work. Learn to read the gauges without the chart in front of you. Internalize the pressure-temperature relationship for the refrigerants you work with.
Digital Thermometer and Clamp Meter
You need to verify temperatures at the suction line, discharge line, and across coils to calculate superheat and subcooling. A good digital thermometer with a surface probe and a pipe clamp is essential. A clamp meter that can read amperage is equally important for checking compressor load and diagnosing electrical issues.
Electronic Leak Detector
In ammonia systems, leak detection is serious business. A calibrated electronic detector is your first line of defense. Your nose is your backup. Learn what ammonia smells like at low concentrations. If you can smell it and your detector isn't picking it up, the detector needs calibration or replacement.
Refrigerant Recovery Equipment
Even if you're working ammonia systems where the refrigerant is vented according to local regulations, you still need to understand recovery equipment for other refrigerants. EPA Section 608 certification requires it and so does proper shop practice.
Nitrogen Regulator and Hoses
Nitrogen is used for pressure testing, leak checking, and purging systems. Every refrigeration tech needs to know how to properly regulate nitrogen pressure and use it safely. A nitrogen regulator with appropriate hoses is a basic shop tool.
Multimeter
Refrigeration is mechanical and electrical. You'll be checking contactors, reading sensor inputs, tracing control circuits, and diagnosing motor issues. A reliable multimeter is non-negotiable.
Pipe Wrenches and Specialty Refrigeration Wrenches
Ammonia systems use different fittings than commercial refrigeration systems. Make sure you know what fitting types your facility uses and have the appropriate wrenches. Using the wrong tool on a pressurized fitting is how people get hurt.
The tool doesn't make the technician. But not having the right tool will make you look like a rookie every time.
Personal Protective Equipment
This isn't negotiable. For ammonia systems specifically: full-face respirator rated for ammonia, chemical splash goggles, ammonia-resistant gloves, and a protective suit for any work in confined spaces or high-concentration areas. Know where your emergency shower and eyewash station are before you need them.
Get the right tools, learn how to use them properly, and the rest of refrigeration will follow. It's a craft worth learning right.
